Schiehallion Potholes

Limestone is soluble in acid water. It is made of calcium carbonate (the mineral calcite). The grykes of the limestone pavement are formed because of solution of the limestone. In the foot hills of Schiehallion where limestone outcrops there are a number of pot-holes. Water runs underground and in one place the burn disappears below the surface. This is called a Swallow Hole. The burn runs undeground for a few hundred meters before emerging on the far side of the Schiehallion road.
